Roxborough Township is one of the original townships of Philadelphia County, composed of eleven separate grants to Original or First Purchasers of Pennsylvania. These tax assessment ledgers located at the Philadelphia City Archives, were compiled not only for local taxation but also for the purpose of collecting the various levies of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The taxable or ratable property included: tracts of land; tenements; grist mills, saw mills and all other mills; breweries; distilleries; forges; furnaces; mines; rents; ground rents; cattle and horses; bound servants; Negroes and mulattos; and single freemen.
