Grund und Lager-Buch. The Ground and Lot Book of Germantown, Phil
An original record of
land divisions within the township of Germantown under the auspices of Francis Daniel Pastorius and the original German settlers
from Crefeld. Pastorius succeeded in petitioning for a charter for borough status of Germantown in 1691. This allowed Germantown to operate its own courts separate
from those established by Philadelphia County and record land transfers independent of the Recorder of Deeds
of the County. Because of this few of the grants and transfers listed in this
book appear in any of the patent or deed books of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or City and County of Philadelphia. This
book is a transcription of the Marion Dexter Laearned translation of the original German volume begun by Pastorius.
